Smack dab in the middle of the 1940s, this screwball comedy stars Oscar-winning actor Henry Fonda as a trust-busting cartoonist who hires a private detective to help him prove his editor’s spouse is a confidence artist. Though her character is a craven opportunist, Jessica Tandy is never one to shy away from a challenge, and she delivers a spirited performance that helps win the day. Auteur Billy Wilder helms this mercurial comedy with flair and engages in a mercilessly cynical game of cat-and-mouse with his characters, but it’s Tandy who steals the spotlight and plays the prize. And though she suffers a seemingly inexplicable breakdown on the film’s set, the actress manages a disarmingly natural performance, showing off her usual brilliant comic timing and wicked sense of humor.

The actor weaves a seething performance that hypnotizes the audience with his sly charisma and ambiguous malice, though at times his manic fits even give off an incongruous aura of innocence.
