In my opinion, it is as hard to navigate with the old interface as it is with the new. The new interface seems to solve this issue quite nicely, giving you the best of both worlds.
With the new interface, the main screen is now a set of rows, each showing a different panel. By selecting, for example, the Marker tool, a row appears (new mark grid) showing the tool on various attributes of the image like Curves, Levels, Shadows, etc. You see which tools are selected as which options appear on the left side.
There are many other new improvements and simplifications in Lightroom 5. The new layout of the Tools panel is a good example. I am sure people who have dabbled in the Adobe applications like Photoshop and Lightroom have their favorites. I strongly suggest that you try all the tools and find out which ones you use the most and then deduce which are more useful for you.
Lightroom has its own Artboard (Frame) with a characteristic diamond-shaped shape. If you have not figured it out yet, the Artboard allows you to define a shape around a bitmap or group of images for reviewing. This has for long been a feature that Photoshop users have wanted. Besides the ability to view your images in a lightbox, you can also zoom into the image in a way that should make it easy to see the details. Of course, you can also zoom in and out on the Artboard itself.
